Cultural Considerations
Clinical staff at York Central Hospital DEC are aware that provision of diabetes education takes place within certain cultural and social contexts due to the diverse nature of clients who are referred to the clinic (O’Grady, 2006). Although culture is popularly considered in terms of activities related to food, music, holiday celebrations, dress and clothing, it also is manifested in language and caretaking practices (SenGupta, Hopson & Thompson-Robinson, 2004).
As a result, all current work within the DEC program involves partnership between the stakeholders; the clients, professional staff, support staff and members of senior management and the administration in a culturally sensitive manner. Provision of education in the client’s native language is offered and interpreters are utilized if a client speaks a language that is not familiar to program staff. Performing a program evaluation that recognizes and respects the different value systems amongst the various stakeholders is also vital to program staff members.
